Here is just what James had to say about his business, views on Freedom works and so much more....
In a couple of sentences, please describe your business?
Purposebridge Limited provides expertise and business strategy consultation across a portfolio of start-up, mid-sized, and enterprise businesses focused on risk mitigation within client-based cloud-first strategies.
James is also a trained Ontological Coach, which means a way of being specifically looking at Body, Emotion and Language with the result of discovering New Possibilities. What do you want to be possible and how do you get there?
Who are your customers?
start-up, mid-sized, and enterprise businesses making a digital/cloud migration, looking to increase diversity and inclusion in their workplace as well as private clients making a commitment to their personal growth, transitioning to a purposeful life and career
How long have you been running your business?
Purposebridge was founded in 2015
What is your unique selling point?
20 years of global, exec experience; General Manager and Vice President with Microsoft and Oracle, in London, Shanghai, Singapore.
A decade of working with organisations such as UN Women’s Committee on Diversity and Inclusion training and Coach to individual leaders at Google, Microsoft, Facebook and many start-ups, my uniqueness is in creating possibilities, impact and execution.
Our unique selling point?
What is unique to me about Freedom Works is the perfect intersection of many key attributes: I’ve been involved in co-working spaces, initially in Singapore with Hub and The Working Capitol, then with the Hub in Westminster, so I really know what I am looking for. Flexibility, vibe, community and great location and facilities.
Why have you chosen to work in a co-working community?
Mental Health! Seriously, I can work from home for days, and miss the ‘water-cooler’ moments, the inspiration of new and exciting ideas, networking with other people’s thoughts, and general hubbub of office life.
My commitment to the community is to be present and available for random chats at least once a week. I have loads of positive energy to give, and that seems a fair exchange all in itself.
What is the most important benefit to you of working from Freedom Works?
I do love the location, with Chichester at its feet, Metro House was a big part of my youth, growing up in the area and going to school at Bishop Luffa - I have returned from living all over the world it is great to have the city as a large part of my working life. Easy access to sustainable transport, trains, buses and cycle routes are important but bottom line is the great people at Freedom Works. Everyone I’ve met is working to have an impact and with passion for what they are doing. I can’t ask for better than that.
Did this surprise you?
No, I wanted this to be possible and so I am not surprised to find it at all. But I will always be grateful to Heather Barrie who told me to check it out!
Who works in your team?
I (James) am the principal, I am assisted by Linda Stanbridge who runs Operations and by several associates that I bring in project by project. You’ll see Linda at Freedom Works from time to time and her big passion is dancing, Modern Jive, Smooth, Blues / Expressive - she is convinced dance will heal all ills and will be happy to give you a twirl in the kitchen!
What is your proudest achievement to date?
My kids Molly and George obvs - but career-wise, opening the first public-facing datacenter for Microsoft (Hotmail, Bing etc) in Beijing was the most audacious, challenging and rewarding project - I don’t expect to ever equal that one! Ask me about my rather short conversation with Bill Gates when I tried to explain why the project was so hard ...
Where do you see yourself and your business in 2-5 years time?
I’m pretty clear on my purpose in life and am executing against that. I see plenty of room to add more clients, NGOs and individuals to my customer list and I will be working ever more on technology solutions and leadership tools for social issues of diversity and inclusion, sustainability but always with the goal of seeing more organisations and individuals achieve their purpose.
What inspires you?
What is possible. I am annoying ‘glass half full’ - I see the potential, what is possible and I am inspired to see that future generated.
What or who motivates you?
I am motivated by my own privilege, my great good fortune and blessings to drive for equity of opportunity, to be an evangelist for the good technology can do and to know that I will arrive one day in my grave - exhausted!
Who is your business hero?
Bill Gates, who went from being an uber-geek to seizing his moment to become one of the greatest philanthropists of all time
Richard Branson, who has lived and breathed a philosophy that if you treat your employees right, they will do right by your customers. Pay attention Amazon!!
How do you spend your spare time?
I play the guitar, run Parkruns and build stuff with my hands (rather than with code!) and muck about outdoors or in the Sea with my children.
What do you like most about Freedom Works?
The vibe - which is a blend of culture, people and aspiration. And Yazz.
